I have been collecting matchbooks and matchboxes for ages, as long as I can remember. It all started with my interest in fire. I used to like to set things on fire, much to my parents’ dismay. After some scoldings, scars and narrow escapes I wised up and just collected the pretty boxes from all over the world. My dad used to travel a lot for work and would bring back bags full of matchboxes from airlines, hotels and restaurants. These were cool, but the really old ones I’d find on fleamarkets and sales were the best.
Then one day I found the typesetter’s trays you see on the same fleamarkets and sales, and voilà, a match was made. (Pun, erm, intended!) Of course to hold them in place I had to span some nylon string across the compartments.
